FYI you'd prefer Plan B; Plan C is violent uprising and castration.
The decision to make Plan B OTC came the day that classes started at my university, so it took until this week for the news to make our mainstream and the campus paper to make some statement. The first full week of the paper's new daily run was been full of stries relevant to student life, and the front page feature of Plan B's new status was a breakthrough on a paper whose editor is known for his conservativeness.
The opening quote from the doctor in charge of our on-campus women's care clinic stated "It's safe enough to put it in vending machines." More than the issues that Plan B will hopefully counter, the emphasis was on the new availability and what it meant to the college community. The article leaned into an opinion that we all could be proud of, but the news article was only the beginning.
The staff editorial running that same day warned that "as soon as irresponsible people use the pill as an excuse for promiscuity, the FDA might have to rethink its decision." Says the editorial, supposedly repesenting the majority opinion of the section editors, "the 'magic pill' label is a misnomer." Forgive me, but honestly. Have any of you out there reading ever heard of EC called 'the magic pill'? I didn't think so. "[If] someone snacks on [EC] like Good & Plenty expecting protection from syphilis, their luck will eventually run out." Wow. You're kidding. so you're telling me that my hormonal birth control won't protect me from diseases that have nothing to do with pregnancy? Thanks, Newspaper Ed Board, I never would have thought of that. But it's okay, they know mistakes happen: "a responsible woman will be able to counter any unwanted pregnancy that might result from a lapse in judgment." Lapse in judgement? As in, having sex? Geez, apparently the newsroom is segregated by sex, and the only communication men and women have is via email. Heaven forbid you have to call a writer for clarification on their story; you'll have to enlist someone else to do it.
And it wasn't over. Today an op-ed column ran that decided "go to the bar, get smashed, forget a rubber" must have been the failed Plan A. The writer's Facebook picture is of himself pouring a line of shots. Hmm. He claims that it's not that he doesn't like Plan B, he just doesn't like it being OTC. That makes perfect sense; make sure someone knows she actually deserves a solution, right?
Wow. I've never been so disappointed in my school.
They don't use the feminine pronouns, but we all know what they're saying. "Women will be stupid with this drug." Women will be unable to use this drug responsibly. Women need a pharmacist to screen their ability to properly self-administer. Women can't handle taking two pills.
We can handle raising a baby and all the unpaid labor a man can dream up. Just not helping ourselves, no, we're no good at that.
I knew these sort of responses would come out of the woodwork. I just didn't expect them to come out of my student body.
I love the title. The
I love the title.
The attitudes you've mentioned are incredibly frustrating, especially since I've only seen it coming from men -- who will never need it. (Well, men and conservative religious women but that's a long rant for another time.) The only solution I've found is here.
She wrote that before ec become otc, but I feel the sentiment applies to anyone who implies that women should not have this option.
EC OTC?!
*FALLS OFF CHAIR*
Oh. my. metal. This is what happens when you turn your head for even a couple of weeks. EC is now OTC?! HALLELUIA!!! BREAK OUT THE ABSINTHE!
--let's just hope no clerks deny us purchase on moral grounds. F**k them, I'll go to register number two! HAH!
*Overly irrational dance of supreme female joy*
Nevermind the whiners. They'll publish their blabbering protests for a while, but it doesn't matter. We won.
