I still have tonsillitis, but I don't feel nearly as ill now. Thanks for the patience.
Being so seriously ill has made me realize how terrifying it is to live without health insurance, though. I completely drained whatever little savings I had going to the doctor, and even then had to ask family and friends for money.
Funny thing is, even though it was terribly dramatic, the whole ordeal was still cheaper than actually having health insurance.
I also didn't have the greatest experiences with my doctors. One of them gave me a prescription without actually explaining what it was for (in fact, you could say he purposefully allowed me to misunderstand), which completely confused me and had me spending another $50 dollars to go back in when there was no reason to.
This same doctor was the one I came to see when my symptoms first presented. I told him, "Look, I think it's mono. I've been exposed to mono and the incubation timeline fits perfectly. I want to do a screening."
"Oh nooo no no, don't be silly, it's not mono... Let me have a look..." He glances down my throat. "Oof, that's red. But don't you worry, probably just a little case of strep--here, have some Amoxicillin. I really don't think that's mono."
Ok, so I pay the $50 and walk out of there without getting the screening. Which of course means I have to pay another $50 when I go back a week later because the antibiotics have done NADA.
The doctor chuckled knowingly. "See, remember last time I said I thought it was mono? And I wanted to do a mono screening?" he said.
Wait... what? Which exam room were YOU in?
I also had to go to a lady doc because the two weeks of antibiotics had given me a terrible yeast infection. I tried to explain to her, look, this is my third yeast infection this year. I'm allergic to the creams, but I didn't have a reaction to the pill last time I took it, so could you please just prescribe me some Diflucan.
Well, no, we can't do that, it's policy, we have to check you out. Ok... Well... There's another huge wad of cash in lab fees to tell me what I already know, but since I literally have no other way of acquiring the medicine I need, I guess I have no choice.
"Besides," she said, "you circled odor. Yeast infections don't have odor."
"It smells like YEAST," I explain, exasperated.
"Uh-huh," she says skeptically.
She then proceeds to very roughly shove in that terrible device, without any warning, without even so much as a, "Now you're going to feel my finger first-"
Now... considering that just TWO MINUTES prior to this I was telling her, "PAIN DURING INTERCOURSE", I wonder exactly what was going through her mind. I also wonder why she felt it was necessary to CHECK THE SIZE OF MY UTERUS when I'd had an annual just two months earlier, and when I was in there for a godd@mn yeast infection. She didn't even warn me, or ask me, she just said, "Ok, now one more thing-", before jamming both fingers up there at once and shoving them up against my uterus. It was SO painful that I almost kicked her in the face. I was THIS close. Thankfully, I think she took a HINT from the way I shot up in my seat with a face of murder, and got out of there quickly.
Three minutes later, she marches in and announces loudly, "It's a yeast infection!"
...Naw, really? Really?
I got my stupid Diflucan, and she wrote me two refills, good for a year. It doesn't really matter, though. I'm allergic to all medicines in this family, and my second exposure to this one was enough: my tongue swelled up. Luckily, I had steroids on hand. Eh? (However, this means that I am now officially allergic to every single yeast infection medication on the market.)
My question is, HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO TRUST THAT PATIENTS KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT THEIR OWN BODIES, TOO?
I knew I had mono. I knew I had a yeast infection.
How difficult is it to say, "In my experience, this doesn't look like mono, but since you seem concerned, we can of course run a lab. It's your choice."
Or, "In my experience, this doesn't look like a yeast infection, but since you've had two already this year, you probably know your own body pretty well. Still, let's have a look, just to be safe."
Or, "This antibiotic is actually not for your tonsils, but for something I noticed on your tongue. So don't attribute anything your tonsils do to taking this medication."
Or, "Prednisone is actually a powerful steroid that can dramatically weaken your immune system. You might feel significantly more ill while on this drug, but your tonsil swelling will go down." Instead of, "Here, this is just like candy, it will make you feel better!" (Ok, so he didn't say the candy part, but almost.)
Or, "Avoid contact sports... BECAUSE YOUR SPLEEN MIGHT BE SWOLLEN." (I stood there for a long time while he just repeated the former, before asking dryly, "Because my spleen might be swollen, right?", and he says, "Yeah, that.")
How about just INCLUDING me in my own health, in other words.
