People who are 19

Most of the women whom I look up to are not self-identified feminists. They are women with powerful spirits, keen minds, and the sort of sordid twists that I believe essential to any civilization. ;) My mother, who managed to complete High School, a bachelors, and later a masters, all WHILST raising me. ALONE. She currently lives more than comfortably and is president of the local BDSM club. My grandmother, who has struggled with everything from raising three girls to anorexia to having a hysterectomy. She collects beautiful little Buddha figurines that she sets on gleaming display in her apartment. My friend Ajna, from Scotland, who is raising a rambunctious little boy, also alone. She has such a capacity for the appreciation of beauty; such a passion for the virtue of liberty; and happens to be one of the sexiest women on my Earth.

I wish to better myself. Fueled by ambition, passion, and an inquisitive mind, I will improve my art, my writing, my mind, my health, my heart, my judgment, and my wardrobe. As I gain these things, I will become more competent in my human duty to carry the world into progression, into enlightenment, and, well, generally into something other than extinction.

On my less ambitious days, I narrow down my goals to reaching level 70 on World of Warcraft.

Bragging rights. Sure, I have won an award here and there. Two “Best Actress” awards, one “Excellence in Journalism” award, plus one local and one state award for my historical research paper on the Scope trial. But I have got to say that the things I am most proud of are: moving to a brand new country with barely five sentences learned of the language and making school honor roll within the first semester; being openly lesbian and alternative in the public education system; saving someone's life; doodling on every piece of paperwork I have ever filled out; and never giving up on the pursuit of happiness.

Feminist heroes to me are the people working in counselling and advice, telling women that they can insist on contraception, they do have choices, they have a right to their own career and a life they want, and don't deserve to be beaten or abused. Those are the people really helping to empower women when they really need it.

Reading, writing, music, cycling, languages, getting out in the fresh air and standing up for what I believe in!

Kathleen Hanna, Inga Muscio, Tammy Gomez, Sandra Cisneros, Oprah Winfrey (of course), Eve Ensler, Judy Chicago, Jennifer Baumgardner, Betty Friedan, My Aunt Phylis, Kim Gordon, Tank Girl, My 9th grade art teacher Melba Roller, Each and Every staffmember of the WGS program at UT, Women's clinic employees and the lovely ladies that run Bookwoman.

Right now, my immediate goals are graduating college, becoming more active in the fight for reproductive rights and picking up my guitar, again.
My longterm goals are earning (and somehow paying for) a Masters degree in Clinical Counseling with a concentration in Women's studies, so that I can become a full-time employee of a women's shelter.

Knitting, crafting, renting movies, cooking fancy meals, reading and collecting cats

My favorite film of all time just might be Tank Girl. Peewee's Big Adventure comes in at a close second, though.

Riot Grrrl and Queercore everything!
But also, the three greats: Sonic Youth, Pavement, and The Pixies

Weetzie Bat - Francesca Lia Block
Solipsist - Henry Rollins

My loftiest personal goal is to transfer in to an Ivy league school - or at least a highly selective school - by next summer. Whether I major in paleontology or art, I'll be pursuing a graduate degree.

I made a perfect 5 on my AP exams!! I made a 30 on my ACT - haven't yet taken SAT, but I'll surely update when I do. ;) I helped co-found a vegitarian activist group. I bought my own car. I stopped wearing makeup and kept feeling beautiful. I've renounced beauty-competition with other women and have pledged myself to support and uplift them - and compete only intelectually.

Martial arts (Tang Soo Do), writing anti-vivisection etc letters to big companies, Reading, Studying, Camping and hiking and walking down old trails in the forest, 43things.com

The Jurassic park trilogy - 'specially the first, 80's horror movies

India Arie - 'I am not My Hair','India Song'/Alanis Morrisette - 'Uninvited', 'Unpretty'/The Goo Goo Dolls - 'Iris'/Paula Cole- 'Feelin' Love'/ Pretty much the entire 'City of Angels' soundtrack ...

(Honestly, usually my 'favorite books' are the books I'm reading at the time the question is asked. :) But here goes... ) Jurassic Park and The Lost World by Michael Crichton, The Feminine Mystique, The Awakening, 'Goddesses, Whores, Wives and Slaves by' Sarah Pomeroy, 'What's Love Got to Do With It?: the evolution of human mating', any book with dinosaurs in it that isn't too overtly corny ...

Um. Lots of people. I'll get into specifics later.

College. Graduate school. Impacting the next generation--be it through parenting, "aunting," teaching, or just through contact with neighborhood kids.
